Zelestra and EDP add 462 MWh of batteries to Spanish solar plants in two new hybrid PPAs

Independent power producer Zelestra and utility EDP have agreed two new hybrid power purchase agreements in Spain, adding 181 MWdc of solar and 462 MWh of battery storage to their partnership, Energy-Storage.news reported on 6 October. Zelestra owns the projects; EDP is the offtaker.

The two projects.

  • Pedroso (Seville): 31 MWdc of solar with a 25 MW / 100 MWh battery.
  • Valkyria (Castilla-La Mancha): 150 MWdc of solar with a 90.45 MW / 362 MWh battery.

The running total. With earlier deals for Pizarosso (April 2026) and Trujillo (July 2025), the batteries in Spain covered by hybrid PPAs between the two companies now total 1,022 MWh. Pedroso, Valkyria and Pizarosso are existing solar plants to which the PPA makes it possible to add storage; Trujillo is a greenfield solar-and-storage project.

Why the structure matters. A solar plant alone sells most of its output at midday, when prices are lowest; in Spain they were negative for 596 hours in the second quarter, according to Montel. Adding a battery lets a producer offer a flatter delivery profile to a buyer. The article notes that such "flat curve" PPAs have been much discussed but that contracts of this kind are still relatively new. Zelestra described its first one, last year, as Europe's first combined solar-and-storage PPA.

Zelestra's other deals. Last month it signed a hybrid PPA with steelmaker Salzgitter Flachstahl in Germany (147 MW solar, 273 MWh storage) and, a month before that, a standalone battery toll with Centrica Energy.
