Greenvolt sells 1.6 GWh of Polish batteries to A&R as PGE starts an 800 MWh build

Developer and independent power producer Greenvolt has agreed to sell two battery storage projects in Poland, each 200 MW/800 MWh, to Malta-based A&R Investments, Energy-Storage.news reports. The deal for the combined 400 MW/1,600 MWh, announced on 23 October, is due to close by the end of the year.

Both projects, Turośń Kościelna and Ełk, were completed in the third quarter of 2026 and supplied by BYD. Each holds a 17-year capacity market contract with delivery obligations from 2028, won in the 2023 auction that Greenvolt dominated for batteries, and Greenvolt has signed a 10-year toll for both with Norwegian state utility Statkraft. Greenvolt's five Polish projects total 1.3 GW/5.2 GWh, and with this deal it has sold four of the five; it started building the fifth, the 600 MW/2,400 MWh Siedlce system, last month.

In separate news, state-owned PGE Group has begun construction of its 400 MW/800 MWh Gryfino battery in Nowy Czarnów, next to existing PGE assets, with an investment of PLN 1.14 billion ($289 million). A consortium of Polish companies will build it, Fluence supplies its Smartstack AC block technology, and it is expected online in 2028.

What it means

Poland's battery market rests on the capacity market: a 17-year contract plus a decade-long toll turns a merchant asset into something an investor can buy as steady income, which is exactly what Greenvolt is selling. Its develop-then-sell model — four of five projects sold — shows where the money is made. PGE's two-hour Gryfino system is a different design choice from Greenvolt's four-hour units, aimed more at short balancing than at shifting energy.
