Grid-scale batteries added 20.9 GWh worldwide in August, a fifth of it Saudi

The split by region is the interesting part. China accounted for 61% of the energy commissioned, Saudi Arabia for 19%, Europe for 11%, and South and Central America for just under 5%.
What it means
Two numbers in that list deserve to be read together. China at 61% is the expected shape and says little that last month did not. Saudi Arabia at 19% of global commissioning in a single month is not a trend line, it is a small number of very large projects landing at once — which is what procurement at national scale looks like when it arrives, and it will not repeat evenly.
The more useful figure for planning is the ratio hiding in the header: 20,855 MWh against 6,516 MW is a fleet-average duration of about 3.2 hours for everything commissioned that month. Duration is the number that decides what a battery is for — frequency response, evening peak, or genuine shifting — and a monthly average in that range indicates the market is buying peak-shifting assets rather than fast-response ones.
Treat the regional percentages as a snapshot and not as market share. A single month of commissioning dates reflects when projects finished, which is a function of supply chains and grid connection queues, and those move independently of where the demand actually is.
