TCL SunPower's new rooftop panel reaches 24.7% efficiency at 505 W with a 40-year warranty
TCL SunPower, a unit of China's TCL Zhonghuan, launched its SunPower Origin series for residential rooftops on 26 October. The all-black modules use the company's eighth-generation back-contact cells and come in five versions from 485 W at 23.8% efficiency to the top SPR-BE54-HD505 at 505 W and 24.7%. The headline number is the warranty: 40 years on product, power and service, guaranteeing at least 99% of rated output after year one and a maximum 0.25% annual degradation thereafter, which works out to about 89.25% of initial power still delivered after four decades.
Two technical choices stand out. The back-contact cells are patterned by lithography rather than laser, which the company says reduces microcracks, and the 54-cell electrical architecture is claimed to behave under partial shading like more than 16,000 bypass diodes. TCL SunPower puts its installed back-contact base above 15 GW with a 0.005% warranty return rate, from an internal June 2026 analysis.

What it means
The efficiency figure is the eye-catcher, but the warranty is the actual claim. Residential solar competes on lifetime yield, not peak watts, and a 40-year term with a 0.25% degradation ceiling is a bet on cell durability that back-contact designs are well placed to make — fewer front-side features to fail. Treat the manufacturer's own return-rate and shading numbers as vendor data until a third party measures them; they are plausible and specifically stated, which is more than most datasheets offer, but they are still the seller's figures. For an installer, the draw is physical: more watts on an awkward roof, and a warranty that outlasts most mortgages.
