Albania's next solar auction will include battery storage for the first time
Albania is preparing its next solar auction, and for the first time it will include battery storage, pv magazine reported on 6 October.
What was announced. Minister for Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi confirmed the government is preparing another auction to be held before the end of this year or in early 2027, developed with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Why storage is now possible. An amendment to the electricity law, adopted in June, facilitates adding battery energy storage to renewable projects and allows producers to trade electricity on the free market.

The track record. Albania has held four solar auctions:
- 2018, won by India Power Corporation Limited;
- two auctions won by French developer Voltalia, for 140 MW and 100 MW projects;
- 2024, offering 300 MW: nine bids were shortlisted and eight secured contracts for 283.9 MW.
Context. Karakaçi said solar now supplies around 11% of Albania's annual electricity production, up from around zero three years ago. Cumulative solar capacity reached 631 MW at the end of 2025. In July the government amended the agricultural land law to allow agrivoltaics on specific categories of land, and last month the energy regulator published a draft law on renewable energy communities.
