NESO opens qualification for a mid-term reactive power market in Great Britain, running until April 2032
Great Britain's National Energy System Operator (NESO) has published the qualification pack for a new Mid-term Reactive Power Market (MTR), with the documents appearing on its website on 6 October. The invitation letter itself is dated September 2026.
What the market is for. Reactive power is how a system operator controls voltage. NESO says the MTR will let it procure reactive power services across Great Britain closer to real time, on a "mid-term" basis. It follows a pre-market consultation in January 2026 and will run until April 2032 unless extended.

How to get in. Providers must first become qualified by submitting a full and compliant qualification submission. The process runs on NESO's new iValua supplier platform. The pack includes:
- instructions to tenderers and the market qualification criteria, which set out how submissions will be assessed;
- eligibility criteria;
- a qualification technical specification with the baseline performance requirements for the voltage service, written on a technology-neutral basis so that different technology types can take part;
- contract terms and an indicative payment calculator, available only on iValua.
NESO notes that where the calculator and the formulae in the contract terms disagree, the contract terms take precedence.
